10/1/2009 - “Dignity through Work” Event Recognizes Workplace Opportunities for People with Disabilities, Features Internationally Recognized Economist as Keynote Speaker
Salt Lake City, Utah. The Columbus Community Center’s “Dignity through Work” recognition breakfast will be held on Wednesday, October 28, 2009, at Little America Hotel from 7:30 to 9:00 a.m. The event recognizes those in the community who have found entrepreneurial ways to employ people with disabilities in our community. The event is presented by the Community Foundation for the Disabled and GE Capital Financial Inc.
Internationally recognized economist David Kotok will share his widely respected insights concerning the current economic climate and financial markets that are making history today. Mr. Kotok will speak to the history, policies, and trends that have shaped the economic climate and that impact our local communities. Mr. Kotok is Chief Investment Officer of Cumberland Advisors (www.cumber.com). He is a frequent contributor to CNBC and is often quoted in publications like The Wall Street Journal and Barron's. His yearly fishing retreat with thirty-five key economists, money managers, and analysts is recognized as a gathering where many of the nation's key financial and economic decisions are discussed and made.
At the event, local businesses and individuals will be recognized for the contributions they have made to support the independence of people with disabilities. Four awards will be given:

Five individuals with disabilities will be recognized as finalists for Columbus Outstanding Worker. Janet Bell, Cody Duran, Anissa Frank, George Kilgo, and Matt Neilson will be recognized for their exemplary work skills and their work ethic in their respective places of employment.

Terrell Harris Dougan and Irene Harris will receive the Visionary Leadership Award. Ms. Dougan recently published “That Went Well,” a memoir about her family’s advocacy and trailblazing efforts to find ways for her sister Irene, who was born with developmental disabilities, to live and work in the community.

The Salt Lake City School District Special Education Department Transition Team will receive the Social Enterprise Award. The award will recognize 15 teachers and staff who worked with students with disabilities to transition them into meaningful community employment.

The Utah Air National Guard will receive the Outstanding Business Partner of the Year Award. They have partnered with Columbus to employ six individuals with disabilities who provide janitorial services in the seventeen buildings at the Utah Air National Guard base.
The event emcee is Stephani Victor, a Paralympian athlete who won a slalom gold medal at the 2006 Torino Paralympic Games and a downhill bronze medal at the 2002 Salt Lake City Paralympic Games (www.stephanivictor.com). She is also recognized for her documentary films and her work as a motivational speaker.
